Dumb question I suppose, but does the automatic transmission on the '05 545i have sport mode? (I'm asking because mine is still on order.) If so, what is the performance difference 0-60?

i'll p/u my car very soon and it'll have 16.2.? for the ones who are driving with 16.2, some had the lag problem before, do you drive more aggresive in d mode or normal as usual in order to have the car to adapt your driving style?? i don't want this problem comes back due to my driving style .? of course i hope these two are not related.

I'm not sure I have to do this, but since upgrading to 16.2 I've decided to drive mostly in D and get the car used to my driving style which is...well....ummm......yeah, I like to go!! I was unhappy before 16.2 with the acceleration lag, but it really seems to be much improved. The engine just seems to growl as I accelerate now....I have hardly used DS in the 3 weeks or so since I did my upgrade. This alone was worth the upgrade to 16.2 for me!! I'll be anxious to see what you think after driving it for a few weeks Alohalc......

Yes when you slap the gear lever to the left when in D, making it DS which is sports mode.

i got my car back few hours ago and only one word, "wow!" i love 16.2 ! i completely agree with you. i don't use ds mode anymore. well, at least not for the past few hours. i've been "suffering" from the lag for almost a year and finally it drives like a real bmw now .

I get 19.7mpg according to the OBC. My commute is surface streets, speed limits vary from 35 - 55mph.

I only use the sport mode for more "spirited" driving...

[quote name='kscarrol' date='May 9 2005, 04:39 PM'][quote name='elchevere' date='May 9 2005, 02:27 PM']Greetings:

Have had my car for nearly 2 months now and absolutely love it....only minor things I have noticed are (1) engine seems to fight against me when I'm in Drive Sport mode and going between 20-30MPH and (2) more importantly, I do not seem to be getting anywhere near the 17 City 27 Highway mentioned by BMW....seems more like 15 City and 20 Highway, at best--with my gas bill nearly doubling from previous car and same driving patterns/mileage......anyone else notice this....I tend to almost always drive in Drive Sport mode--is that a factor?

Yes, driving in Sport mode will definitely lower your gas mileage! Driving in DS, your car will NOT go into 6 gear (overdrive) at highway speeds, therefore you are running a higher RPM on the highway.

That is one factor. I assume you keep your tires properly inflated. And are your numbers coming from the onboard computer or are you calculating the old fashioned way when you fill up? The onboard computer is noted for not being very accurate.

BUT.....you can actually shift "manually" into 6th gear while in sport mode.
I keep mine is sport mode on the highway, manually shift to 6th when up to cruising speed and then just slap it to normal and back to sport when I need to start slowing down or when exiting the freeway etc...

Correct me if I am wrong but doesnt the manual say that once you are in DS mode you should avoid touching the shifter and that the slightest touch of the shifter while in DS mode will result in the mode being shifted to manual?

Thanks for the replies....I checked my OB computer and I am averaging a measley 14.7 MPG in a combination city/highway driving....I will take your advice and begin driving in Drive mode only and, hopefully, see a gradual increase in my MPG...I have 1400 miles on the car and also hope this mistake will not effect future performance/results.
