If I remember correctly, if the opener has a "learn" button, which any I have ever seen do, then you should be able to program it..

+1 - What type/manufacture is the garage door opener? Some (Genie's Intellicode models for example) require a 2-step process. The first step is to 'learn' the existing transmitter by following the remote programming instructions for the car. The second step will require you to tell the opener that the car is a legit device (it's a necessary part of code-hopping devices). For Genie Intellicode models, carefully remove the light diffuser at the front of the opener. There should be a little red button, along with a LED light. Quickly push the button (If you hold the opener button in for 10 seconds, all remotes attached to the opener will be erased and will have to be 're-learned'!). The LED should illuminate. Within 30 seconds, press the programmed button on the car. Then press it again. One more press and the garage should respond.

I seem to think that ANY garage door opener can be programmed into the car, it all comes down to the method and a little Patience!

I agree...I think I initially tried (unsuccessfully) to program mine with instructions from the car (manual), but then went to the garage door opener's website and followed their instruction and it worked. I seem to remember a good bit of trial and error too...

so when we are saying the "opener" are we referring to the hand-held device or the actual opener on the ceiling that literally opens the garage?

the hand-held device is a POS and has not lights on it at all. it's like the cheapest looking thing i've ever seen. if that's what we are referring to, maybe i need to buy a new one of those?

thanks for the help.

I had this problem and I struggled with it for a while then I saw a post here that suggested to replace the battery in the remote garage door opener and what do you know it work at the first attempt! So I guess it is important to make sure you have a fresh battery in your garage door remote!
