I have the same problem. I tried to post about it before but I did not get any response. The noise is actually an air intake tube for something, it sucks air in and then goes thru the firewall on the passenger side right where the carpet meets the lower dash panel. I believe it is for air recirculation but it stays on any time the key is on even if the a/c controls are set to off. I agree it is very loud and would love to figure out a way to shut it off. In the picture the end of the pencil shows where the intake tube is at.

If you want to know they are the USB and AUX plugs that come with my gateway 500 that I got for the ipod. I included a picture of the main unit and also a link to see it with the 2Point5 ash tray kit as well. The Gatway 500 is not as good as the oem adaptor if you want to chose songs on the idrive but if you have an early E60 without text than the Gateway unit along with this dock allows you to chose the songs by the iPod controls and also go to next track FFD Reverse or prev track with the idrive wheel or the steering control. http://www.methodsound.com/methodsound/E60_545i.html#4

not sure if it's of any help but in my e46 M3 there is a small fan in driver's foot well that pulls air from passanger cabin and blows it through the fire wall where the ecu and some other electronic modules are located. you can't see it without removing half the car apart but it might be something similar.

I know it is an air intake fan and to see it you have to lower just the under dash panel. I think the question is wether or not is is normal and can you turn it off. Mine stays on 100% of the time that the key is in the run position. There is no way to shut it off. I was hoping that someone would say that they had this fixed due to a bug in the software and that it should only be on in air re circulation mode or something like that.
