Fuel Filter at 150,000 Miles
Hi Fellow Members,
I replaced the fuel filter on my '06 550i at 150k miles. Did it myself. Not too difficult. The fuel shooting through the line when you disconnect is a pain, especially the delayed shot I experienced after I thought it was done. Have to clean the pad under the seat. There are a couple good DIY threads on this site. The filter looked pretty dirty, but not sure cleaning was mission critical. Photo attached. If the new filter color is black, I may have wasted my time. I will also attach a photo of the tool I used to unscrew the cap/ring-- KTC Tools B2111-- that I purchased on line for about $40. Solid tool. Helped a lot. I will post driving impression later.
Happy Motoring!

i rigged up a tool similar to yours. never knew they made one. lol
i've heard of others using a screwdriver and hammer and pounding the ring off. no way was i going to risk cracking plastic. good job.

Driving Impression-- Improved!
After changing the fuel filter, the car seems more responsive. But, that could be a placebo effect (or me wanting to justify the time I spent and gas fumes I inhaled doing the job). Either way, it's good!

Fuel filters on cars with electric fuel pumps are always black. The filter is past the pump to assure it catches the motor brush wear particles from pump. The strainer on pickup down in fuel does the bulk of filtration by leaving the crap in tank.
