Just handed back a 530i auto loaner after a week and 700 miles of "average " uk driving and it returned a frightening 19mpg (imperial).
I'm glad to be back in my 530D auto which returns 29mpg overall and over 33 on a fast run. To be honest the BMW figures are misleading.

PS what the heck do the yanks care about consumption for ? Fuel is so cheap there.

29/33 sounds about right... I get about 27-30mpg on lots of short town driving but just got 37mpg on a short 'touring' holiday with a good mix of driving, including lots of 50-90mph stuff. I tend to use the M mode with this sort of driving to get better control and IMHO better timing of shifting. Even the D mode doesn't shift up as early as I'd like when in 'fuel conservation' mode.

These are fuel computer figures - I'm assuming they're accurate...!

i am concerned that my 530 is a diesel and i am getting such poor returns of 20-23 mpg. surely this is too low a figure even though i do lots of short distances during the day

I just finished 460 mile highway drive and averaged out at 24.6 mpg. My speed was primarily at 80 mph.

That's about right for my 545 under those conditions. However, that's OBC. Actual is running 4-5% less -- almost always under any conditions.

I usually get around 30-31 on the highway and 21-23 on the local roads. I drive about 120 miles a day to and from work. 60 of that is in stop and go traffic every 1/8th of a mile. (SUCKS). Here is a screen shot. Also keep in mind that most of these miles are in stop and go traffic because I only work 4 days so I am home driving around town most of the time. I do drive hard, take off from lights and cruise about 90 on the highways.

I?ve posted this before but somewhat altered it now:

I get 36 US mpg (or about 43 UK mpg) in mixed city/hwy driving.
This is with 17" standard winter traction wheels. When I use my 18" 124 runflat summer wheels consumption increases around 10%.

As my driving is normally calm bordering on numb I?m not as impressed as those figures might look to some of you.
Same driving characteristics would make my previous e46 320D give 50 US mpg without much effort (of course smaller, lighter and not at all as powerful car - but an almost 40% increase in diesel consumption is still a bit much for a newer car and engine touted as a breakthrough in low consumption)

Also in that car I was easily 15% BELOW the official BMW consumption figures which I guess felt really good as a confidence issue with BMW advertising.
On the new 530D I feel I?m around 5% OVER the official BMW consumption figures so I guess they might have recalibrated their standards on their official info.

The numbers are calculated on fuel bought and odometer mileage and now seemingly consistent after driving around 20000 us miles in 6 months

Also interesting in my experience is the fact that choice of wheels seems to have much bigger impact than load, use of AC or Rain/wind - wheels seems to be almost on the same level as a 25-30% increase in speed for consumption.

best
