ON ORDER
I don't understand why anyone would want to use double sided sticky tape or wire ties to hold the plate on.
If your going to have the plate on you might as well screw it to the bumper. I went 4 years without a front plate on my 2001 330ci and never got stopped once even with 2 cross country trips. If the dealer didn't screw on the fornt plates on my 5 er I'd still be driving without the plate on.
Come on double sided tape. Get the clean look and get rid of the plate, chance it.
cheers

My UK registered car has the license plate held on by two screws about 15mm in from the top left and top right corners.
Here, a front plate isnt optional. With our nanny culture, the police rather like their speed cams to get a good shot at you.
Strange thing is that no license plate is only approx half the cost of a speeding fine, and doesnt carry points on your license. this will change is suspect!

I'm faced with the same problem. I got my plates in the mail from the DMV about 10 days ago. Haven't put either of them on yet.
When I bought the car, I actually made the decision to mount the front plate. I told the dealer to go ahead and just do it for me when the car came in from port. When I went to pick up the car, there was no front plate bracket. He told me that they don't mount the bracket on 550i's or the M cars. He said, I know it's illegal but the car is so beautiful, it's a shame to mess that up. He gave me the bracket and screws and said to stop back after I get the plates if I still want him to put the bracket on.
Living in Los Angeles, the bottom line is cops WILL pull you over for no front plate. In my last car, which was an Audi S4, that had zero mods (not even window tint), I was pulled over twice last year for no other reason than no front plate. It is a fix-it ticket, and you can just pay it rather than fixing it. That's what I did, I think it was about $140. I also used to get tickets from the meter-maid for no plate, I think those were $35.
I have a few friends who have put the back plate on and left the registration paper taped to the inside of the windshield, and that seems to work pretty well. If a cop sees you from head-on, he'll think your car is new.
Another friend just bought this mount for his car (not a BMW). Not sure if it would work on the e60:

That would be interesting... you get pulled over and since it's a fix-it ticket, you just show the cop right there that you do have a plate mounted, you just forgot to flip it out. He can't give you a ticket then.
It's a tough call... Not only is it expensive to get tickets, but I just don't like getting pulled over. It's a hassle. I don't drink & drive, but I've certainly had a beer or two and driven home. The last thing I need is to get arrested and the only reason I got pulled over was the license plate issue.

Don't forget PARKING ENFORCEMENT can ticket you for not having front license plate in Los Angeles.
if you park in hollywood, mid-wilshire, downtown, or santa monica, don't be surprised when you see ticket on your windshield

I saw this on the weekend - a new porsche turbo with a front license plate that was appeared painted on. I must be a decal made from an image of the plate. The colour and detail was vibrant (unlike my crappy cell phone image). It looked exactly like the real plate but obviously fit the contour of the bumper. Really cool.

I seen that on a F-360 before. But I wonder if local sign shops would be willing to do it... is copying a license plate illegal?

that might look kinda cool with a cali plate on an AW e60...all you would really see is the blue numbers, because our plates have a white background...
