I have fixed a relay that switches my fog lights on automaticaly 20 secs after the the ignition has been turned on.

The background is that here in Sweden there is law to always have the headlights on, even in daylight. As an alternative one can have parking lights on together with special "warning lights", or foglihts on.

Anyway, it looks better during daylight with parking lights and foglights on and I save the expensive Xenons....

The relay I put between the light switch and the cable connected to the light switch. It took some investigation to understand the signals comming out from the switch, but is is possible to figure out.

Hey Dave......I could not agree with you more. Anyone who says that a PROPERLY ALLIGNED foglight with the right beam pattern is blinding the oncoming traffic has not actually looked at the light pattern the foglight gives off. If you park 10 or 15 feet away from a wall and turn on the lights you can clearly see how low to the ground the foglight beam is and how low and sharp the cutoff line is. If you then mesure the height of the cutoff line and compare it with the height of the foglights you will see that it is lower....meaning that as the distance increases the height of the cutoff would go lower still...not higher. Even a PROPERLY alligned low beam headlight would blind the oncoming traffic way before the foglights come into play. The Xenon headlights of some other manufacturers cars cause infinately more glare than any foglight can. Sometimes even BMW Xenons can blind you, especially when the car goes over a bump and the cutoff line is raised. I remember back in the 70's and 80's when BMW had the huge US bumpers they used to hang some generic bumper mount Bosch or Hella foglights on the bumpers. Those would go out of alignment all the time when they were bumped around and would often blind the oncoming traffic, but when BMW started using body mounted foglights here in the US as well that problem went away.

As far as the light from the foglights reflecting off of a wet road surface and causing problems for the oncoming drivers, that happens not just with foglights but with low beams as well. It does depend on the ride height of my car and the distance of my car from the other car, but it happens all the time. Also, many times (not always but many times) when there is fog the road surface is likely to be wet. Where I live there is at least one month of the year when almost everyday in the morning there is BOTH fog AND wet road surface. The wet road surface is NOT caused by rain, but by the fog itself....so now we can only use the foglights when there is fog BUT the road surface is not wet?

Can you just accept that there are actually ppl out there who find it distracting and get blinded by them?
If you don't have this problem, it doesn't mean others doesn't have it. And it doesn't mean that they don't have a right to complain about it, just because you don't get the point.
Beeing a responsible driver who cares for others just as for himself, you ONLY use the foglights when there is HEAVY fog.

I know ppl who have BIG problems with it. I just accept it, even though I don't get blinded nor distracted, not even when an oncoming car has the high beams on. It all depends on how well trained you are and where you look at, IMHO.
Anyways, just accept it and be a responsible driver. Be a proud BMW driver, not some pimp showing off...
