if you notice that all the cars you mentioned are either American or Japanese. It is not Illegal to have fog lights on in the USA or Japan (meaning you can drive with them on infront of a cop and they will keep eating their donuts). On the other hand, I see how some people in Europe have a hard time grasping this situation since it is Illegal there to have them on.

Most American and Japanese cars do have the Fogs turn on Automatically when the headlights turn on, hence the same situation with my dad's Cadillac.

 

I think you'll find that the trend is for all manufacturers to go to a switch that has to be pressed each time rather than the ones that stay on.

The E39 had a switch that stayed on -- the E60 setup is new, even for BMW...

 

Sorry Rudy,on my wife's Montero Sport if you turn the fog light switch to the on position and leave it there everytime you turn on the parking lights or the head lights the fog lights come on by themselves,when you put on the high beams they go off or you can turn them off manualy.

I didn't mean to imply that all cars are that way now...

Clearly, there are cars, especially the American ones, that still have the switch that you can leave on (so that they work with the parking or low beams) and just a couple years ago, the E39 was that way. (I used to joke that the switch on Pontiacs was built into the drivers seat and was activated by the weight of the driver. )

What I was trying to say is that I predict that slowly, all manufacturers will begin to adopt the "new" foglight switch setup to help avoid the issue of people leaving them on all the time even when it's not foggy...
