Firewall heater hoses

Agreed. Most of the big hoses on my n62 were replaced when we did the water pump at 250K kms. The expansion tank (hairline crack) was replaced at 350K kms and the plastic hose running along the top of the radiator was replaced with a copper tube at around 300K kms. Not sure what the "mickey-mouse" shaped fitting is!? None of those hoses was leaking before we changed them.

The mickey mouse hose is the rubber hose under the oil cooler.

It comes out of the block and twists down to the electric thermostat (next to the water pump).

And the Mickey Mouse coupler is only on N54/N52 I believe.

Yes. And ECS (and others) sell an aluminium replacement for the plastic 'mickey mouse' shaped part that fails. You re-use the hose, which is perfectly good.

Earlier we were talking about replacing the heater core hoses.

Take a peek at how this guy in the video below pulled off the heater hoses from the heater core.

He did it inside the engine bay at the firewall. He removed the wipers and front wind shield coverings.

He didn't do it from inside the cabin under the dash.

SeanJordon could you have also used this method? See video about at the 2 minute mark.

That's a lot of work! Two takeaways for me: 1) make sure your cabin air filters are replaced regularly to prevent the evap core and heater core fins clogging with crap, and 2) why couldn't BMW have put the expansion valve in an accessible spot, since it's a specific failure point on its own?

If I ever need to do anything to my HVAC, I'll be changing the fan and both cores. Yuck.

The hose clamps are not visible from the firewall. How did you remove the 3 hoses at the firewall?

I know this is an old thread I've done it and it's not that bad but, it can be done. If this is any relevance to anyone I'll go further with what is involved.

On our cars, part #10 shown above is a fat rubber thing and it pries off. I changed hoses on one car because I was chasing a poor flow issue. Since these hoses are away from the engine I would not have otherwise. The 12-year old ones were still solid and flexible.
