I do not know so I am seeking expert opinions.
Is this a problem or is the right hand tip not really connected to exhaust system? It has never been cleaned and appears too pristine to have any exhaust gases passing through it. On Realoem it appears both tips are connected but are they really or is something broken?

Cobra, - that side of the tips has the exhaust valve which is closed by default (and opens when the engine is under load) so I would say it's normal that side is slightly "pristine" as you put it. Mine has the valve as well - but never had that phenomenon because I have 2 separate mufflers + I've fixed the valve in the open position !

On my aftermarket exhaust, both of my tips get filthy. I too, have a 530xi. However, I thought that on my old, stock one, both tips got pretty dirty too. Never noticed one being pristine and the other being dirty. They looked the same.

I would say it is not functional. Is it OEM or aftermarket? Get a coat hanger and see if the tip opens into the muffler.
It seems very strange to me.

All OEM, as he is a geezer like me so the only mods we do are FUZZY DICE (you may not know what those are). But your tip is a good one. I'll pass it along. Thanks. Unfortunately I am not within driving distance of the vehicle in question so he will need his cabana boy do this test (sorry - KoTR humor)
We may need to exchange geezer stories one day. Remind me to tell you about some of my favorite Burma Shave signs along the hiway, back in the day of course. If you have to Google it, I gotcha, lol.

One of my favorite pastimes riding with parents in eastern Washington and Idaho. Seems like the more desolate the better the material.
