Just hold your foot over the dirty tip and check if it's coming any exhausts from the other.

Both sides are functional in the US. The normal path is through one side only but after a certain threshold (don't know if it's RPM, load, accelerator petal position, etc) aggressive driving opens the other side. Mine are both black because I drive more agressively. This is a nice feature because if you go to buy a used BMW, you can tell by this if the car was driven naughty or nice.

Thanks all
BTW, I messed up. The car in question is a 535xi E61. Even though a tt I "assume" the exhaust works the same although REALOEM does not yet show the E61 535 in the US or Europe for that matter.

Since clarified as a 535, vegas indicated the 535 has the same vacuum operated muffler damper as the v-8's. If that is the case, ur geezer friend is granny driving and not reaching throttle/RPM stage where the vacuum gate opens, therefore running through one tip. This makes sense if 535 has same muffler setup as the v8.

ask ur friend to look for the vacuum module.

In the US..the left side gets used...in the UK and Japan it is on the right.

Anything to do with where the driver sits????? Hmmm
