This happened today. i-drive totally unresponsive, no radio nav, nothing. Even after a restart. I cured it by holding down the menu button on the console for about 5 seconds. This seemed to re-boot the system. Is this a symptom for something yet to come?

If by 'restart' you mean turning the car off for a moment and turning it back on - it won't do anything. Even when the car is off there are several data buses that continue to transmit data - unless you waited 5 min they will still be active.

I have the same problem you describe but what I have found is that that the i-drive is not 'lock up' but is completely unresponsive for 1-2 minutes.

I know why it happens.

I've been examining my problem with a CAN-BUS analyzer that I wrote. From what it looks like, all of the modules power-on at the same time and there is so much data on the k_can that the radio is slow to process all of it and waits to retry its initialization - which usually by the retry time the k_can has settled and everything functions as normal again.

I'll try to post a youtube video showing what happens.

About three times. Each time, it was related to reading burned CDs or DVDs.

A "Ctrl-Alt-Del" I-Drive reboot fixed it (that's Eject, Eject and Mute - hold all three buttons down for a couple of seconds). Can be done while I-Drive is on, whether vehicle is motion or not.

Yeah, every time I get into the car it takes like 2 minutes to connect to my phone and nothing works... And I have used the "reset" above when needed.

Mine locked up and now I am hunting the parts I need to replace: CCC, TCU, and I figure while I'm at it I might as well get the Aux port or iPod adapter since the new parts needs programming anyway.

You're wasting your money if you do this. It has nothing to do with replacing the components. It's a data bus contention problem. It's an architectural problem with the k_can (CAN BUS) in the BMW system. Just chill out and wait 2 min for everything to normalize.

I started having issues after I installed the 2009 navigation DVD. I removed it and it has not given me any problems since...

Not always the case, 2 dealers and an indy told me CCC is dead (hence the reason that after lock up the screen kept flashing then going black). That is why I am hunting the parts

Waiting longer than 5 minutes after I shut the car did not work in my case. The i-drive button would not do anything not just radio functions. The CD was not selected, I was in FM mode when the problem developed, although there was a CD in the dash changer and a full load in the changer and the NAV disk inserted. I also noticed the door and seat belt chimes did not work when the i-drive was dysfunctional.

Interesting. The door and seat belt chime is sent via k_can to the ccc which creates the 'ding' through the speakers. If the ccc is locked up then the chime won't work. Either the k_can is shorted/grounded (which in my experience causes the instrument cluster to light up like a x-mas tree along with ever error message that can be produced) or your ccc has some major issues. Try removing the negative side of the battery for 15 min. This should cause everything to reset.
