Are there any BMW engine experts (the technical side) on this forum?
It appears that the engines in the LCI E60 525i/xi, 528i/xi and the 530i/xi are the same. All 3 litres (2996cc), all 6 cylinder 4valve, same stroke/bore (88.0/85.0), same compression ratio (12.0 except the 528i which is 10.7) and the rpm redlines are almost the same with the 3 cars, but there are noticeable differences in horsepower (525 - 218hp, 528 - 230hp, 530 -272hp) However, are the engines in these cars the same? If they are, wouldn't it be possible to get the same or near the horsepower of the LCI 530 from the engine in the 525 and 528 through electronics modifications?

A 328 hp (740i) block is a bit stronger than a 218 hp (525i) one.
The US engines differ from the EU engines. IE the current EU 530i has 286 hp.
The (3-5)35i is about the same but the others differ a lot.
Different engine tops (DOHC and valve systems) and electronics.
For short, it has to do with the Californian emissions control (same for all US sold BMW).

No, no and no but all the 3.0 liter gasoline engines have the same aluminum block - almost.
