While on a recent week-long business trip, I encountered a new development with my e60. After fueling and restarting the engine it would stutter and almost stall (did stall twice) when placing in gear and pressing the gas pedal. This occurred every time I refueled. The rest of the 2500 mile trip was uneventful. Could it be the fuel filter? No warnings or notices popped up after each incident. Thanks for any suggestions.

No suggestions here. Mine (steptronic) sputtered died at a stop sign the other day. That was strange.

Same thing on mine... Haven't done it since I brought it in for a service, but it happened a lot after the first few months of having my car... No suggestions either. Sorry for the unhelpful post..

Did it only happen after refuelling? Did you refuel after long runs/with very hot engine?

I'm just thinking the refuelling itself may have nothing to do with it, it may just be temperature related (vapour lock or some irregularity with injectors), though I have never heard of it on E60s.

Sorry - pretty much in the dark.

I drive a '04 545i that will do this after I fuel up. It happens intermittetly after a good drive when the engine is well warmed up. The last time I had it serviced I was told a vent on my fuel tank was locked open and required replacement. Along with this I would get a intermittant tighten your fuel cap warning and would do so but the cap always seem well seated and tight. The vent was subsiquently replaced under warrenty and I figured this would take care of the problem. I hate to say it really has not changed much. I still get this warning intermittantly and the car is dificult to start at times as you hve described.

It sounds like there is some sort of vapour lock in the feeding circuit that prevents fuel from getting to the injection pump; probably the refuelling stop with a warm engine is just long enough for the vapour lock to form! Having said that, I'm no closer to recommending a solution - sorry guys!

Mine happens randomly, sometimes we I get on a small bump and most of the time after refuelling, warm engine, about 10 minutes drive from my house to the gas station, so all in all, its just random but most of the time only after refuelling.
