Just an update.
Replaced the spark plugs and coils. The car is back to normal now. The spark plug sockets were clean but when I pulled two of them out there was a bit of oil then noticed on the spark plugs and then in the two sockets. Not sure where that oil came from as I did replace the valve cover gasket about 10k miles ago which was done by BMW dealership.

Thanks for threading...This same exact problem happened to my car just last night.
Car had a rough start but I didn't think much of it, drove for about 10 miles in stop and go traffic then hitting the highway and getting up to 80mph everything good so far, approaching my destination driving in slow moving traffic in the back roads the engine reved by itself then started shaking then I got the check engine light - reduce power. Car wasnt getting any power, I was able to get up to about 40mph but it took a while and the car was very sluggish. I parked the car up for about 3 hours and when i started it again to head home it was fine, good start, drove smoothly, light went away.
This morning I had to make a quick run to the store, started the car and I got the engine shakes again, didn't drive far and no lights came on, but I'm very very nervous.
I only recently bought the car and it has 69K on it. (2009 535xi)
I will head to autozone this weekend to check the codes.

Again thanks for everyone's insight on this.

Naz - if you wouldnt mind, please PM me how much the fix ran you.

Default Same issue

Hey nazboy, quick question bro. I have the same exact issue with my 535xi can you tell me what you did to get the problem fixed? Was is it just the changing of the plugs?

Hi Guys...

I got the codes for my car and it turned out to be the HPFP.
With the BMW extended warranty on this part (10 year 120K miles) this was just replaced free of charge.
I was also told the same warranty goes for the turbos.

Hi Jassa,

That's correct I replaced the 6 spark plugs and 6 coils and the missfires stopped.
