engine light comes on - engine shakes
Hello all,
I am hoping maybe someone can help me if they have experienced the same issue. I have a 2008 528i 85k miles and over the last two weeks my engine light comes on twice and the engine starts shaking roughly/vibrating. I pull over shut off and turn on the engine and the shaking goes away. The two times when it happened is when I pressed on the pedal hard to accelerate quickly. At the same time when I did accelerate quickly the car appeared as if it didn't have power and the engine felt like it frisked/skipped and that's when the engine light comes on and the engine starts shaking. I restart the car and the shaking goes away. I also feel something different even if I am just driving on a highway doing 65mph and if I need to accelerate if feels as if the car (only sometimes) doesn't have power or isn't sure what to do and kind of stalls for a sec but eventually does accelerate and goes. Could it be a bad spark plug? Two things I did. I changed my oil about two weeks ago. Also I had to get regular gas at BP for 20 bucks as they didn't have Premium and I was running very low and needed that to get to the next gas station. I have always used and use Premium gas for this car. First I though the issue was maybe bad gas but since then I burned through two full tanks of Premium gas and the issue still persists. If anyone has any thoughts please do let me know. Thanks all |
Did the issue happen when the gas was put in (when regular octane gas was in tank)? Also not much we can say, if u don't get the code read out. Its free at auto zone, i would think it may be a bad coilpack as misfire would cause shake. But this isnt guessing game, you dont want to be throwing expensive parts/labour at the car and have positive result. With the codes it will give a better idea and give a general area to look for the cause of shaking

a tired fuel pump?
maf sensor going wacko? its hard to tell. start by pulling the codes like mentioned, to get a starting point. |
+1 You need to read the codes. Sounds like it could be a lot of things. Wife's had a similar complaint that also went away after restarting the car -- the code was cylinder #4 misfire. I never did anything about it as it never returned.

Thank you, I will go ahead and get the codes this thursday and go from there. It might also be a good idea to clean the MAF sensor while im at it.

I had two coils go out at the gas station. Ran fine when I turned it off. Started running rough & missing on restart. I replace all the coils and all been well since. Had about 70,000 on it then.

Ok, went to autozone and they did not pull up any codes. Cleaned the MAF sensor and it feels much better. Will give it a few days to see if the issue still happens. Does anyone know once you clean the MAF sensor if it needs a few days to adjust?

whelp the issue didn't go away the car went into limp mode again. will have to take it to a real mechanic.
