Wow it seems very expensive to replace a simple fluid. Thank god my smg tranny has a fill and a drain plug.
I provided the parts and the indy mechanic did it for me for $37.50(both tranny and differential) and took only 30minutes.
I wish bmw just drops the free maintenance and stop attracting wrong customers. My sister wanted 3series only because
she doesn't need to replace engine oil often and costs her $0 for any maintenance although she ended up with a Lexus IS.
The lexus IS needs oil changes ever 5K and if you do it "right" with all their inspection its $250 a pop every $5K miles. I know I owned one.

If you want to replace the filter you will have to buy a new pan. the filter is built into the pan plus it is now made of plastic and once removed it will never seal properly. From the techs that I have spoken with, the pan is broken almost everytime they remove it. They also said that if you elect to change your fluid, they will make you purchase the new pan no matter what. If your a CCA member you get 10% of the pan

DO NOT USE ANY THING OTHER THAN BMW STUFF
which I have posted

Thanks. Do you know where I can purchase that correct oil? The BMW dealers here in the US do not sell it in those bottles like you have in your posted pic...they only have it in bulk containers and do not sell to to a do-it-yourselfer.

Guys, give me a few days. I am waiting on good weather to do this. I have everything and will be able to answer all questions. We will know exactly how many liters are needed. I should have it done sometime this week.
As far as changing the filter/pan, if you don't change it, you will always have some oil left in the pan. Additionally, the filter will still have all the dirt stuck to it.
It's like changing your oil, would you change it without changing the filter?

one thing to keep in mind, you'll have to raise the car evenly(level), and top off the trans fluid while the car is running.

Yuup, been there, done that a bunch of times. I have it down.
Gotta raise the car level, loosen fill to make sure, open drain, drop pan, install new pan, fill new fluid, close the fill plug, turn the car on, run it thru gears, let the oil temp get to 100deg F (approx 5 mins), open the fill, top it off!
Regards.

This is why Lexus are regarded as "high quality" cars. More maintenance at shorter intervals = longevity and less failures, and I don't care what brand of car you drive. One of the most reliable cars we have ever owned was a Hyundai Sonata bought brand new in 2001 (no snickering, that's what the wife wanted ) We got rid of it in 2008 and only changed one alternator and one oxygen sensor in 7 years. Since I was able to control its maintenance from the very beginning, I changed oil and filter every 3K miles, tranny fluid at 30K, flushed radiator every 2 years, flushed brake fluids every 2 years, etc. and that car was bullet-proof. One ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I've had the dealer change the tranny fluid twice in 5 years in my E46 and it went well both times. I plan on keeping the car 3 more years (currently 106K miles) and plan on having one last fluid change before then, maybe in about a year.

I too own a 1999 Hyundai Sonata GLS V6 currently with 150k miles on it. Excellent car except for the crappy paint and the fact that today it's only worth $1000. Other than that GREAT CAR!

Now... should I really change the tranny fluid on my 2004 530i after 6 years and 80,000 miles?
