I still don't understand how the various consumer protection agencies let them get away with it. If something fails because of bad advice, shouldn't the party giving the bad advice be held liable for their bad advice??? If my doctor believes (for whatever reason) that fat is not bad for me and tells me in writing that I can go ahead and eat all the fat I want, wouldn't the doctor be liable If I die of a massive heart attack? If a transmission fails because it has never had a tranny fluid replacement because BMW told its customers (in writing) that it never needs tranny fluid replacement, shouldn't they be held liable if an independent shop can testify that the tranny failed because of the lack of tranny fluid replacement???
I guess your right. But you know that there are always legal loop holes through everything. A warranty is a warranty and that's it. There is no such thing as a BMW warranty past 100k miles. And if your tranny breaks after, the best thing you can hope for is a good will.

Were you under CPO warranty? or aftermarket warranty?
My X5 was under the Certified series warranty they have here which covers major components until 2010 or 2011 I believe... I'd probably have to check my invoice though.

I plan to do this in the next couple of days. I have all the parts. Also plan to do a DIY writeup.
Regards.

What fluid are you planning to use? I've been looking all over for the correct fluid for the 6 speed steptronic and have been unable to find it anywhere.

There are a lot of posts on here and most seem to suggest changing the fluid, but again, where can we get the correct fluid?

I bought my ZF filter kit from them but I have an account with a wholesaler that carries the Pentosin fluid.
Good luck.

If they dealers extract the oil you can do the same with an oil extractor if you google it. I use to change my Mercedes oil with this. It might work with the tranny and save you a buck or two (hundred). I'm not sure about that filter. It's interesting I'm sure I need to change mine as well.

If you have the tranny fluid changed (which I am going to have done at 50K) you will need to replace the pan/filter. There are two reasons: 1) the pan is plastic and the tech will not be able to get it off with out causing some type of damage which will render it useless. 2) the filter is built into the pan so if you want to replace the filter, you will need to replace the pan. I know Synthetics are great but not lifetime good. I would replace the trans fluid and diff at the same time. Besides... what is $700-$800 on top of the 105.00 for the oil change every 15K (changing it 7500 miles) compared to what it used to maintain a pre BMW paid maintenance. You might as well have them change the fuel filter while there doing "Un-Schedualed Maintence"

i read somewhere that a independent did a trans fluid change on a 7 series, and just after, the trans failed to the tune of something like 10k.
i guess bmw figures the odds are better at not disturbing the trans versus routine fluid changes.
