My current mileage is at 75k. My logic is that BMW says to change it at 100k, old school says to change it at 60k. With all this new technology and better fluids, I would split it right in the middle. In my case, no point in waiting till 80k because I already have all the parts and it's only going to get colder in the NE so might as well get it out of the way now than to wait till 80k.

Yup. Turning a ratchet with numb fingers really really sucks.

I too own a 1999 Hyundai Sonata GLS V6 currently with 150k miles on it. Excellent car except for the crappy paint and the fact that today it's only worth $1000. Other than that GREAT CAR!

Now... should I really change the tranny fluid on my 2004 530i after 6 years and 80,000 miles?
If it were my car, I would have a reputable BMW dealer do it at this point. You, of course, have to make your own decision. I guess that if you have them change the pan (with built-in filter) there may be less chance for sludge or whatever dislodging and causing trouble since you're starting fresh. I would probably have them change the pan and fluid at this time and then only change the fluid after about 40K.

I was told from a BMW mechanic that you don't replace the fluid in the trannys, they are maintenance free for the lifetime. Strange I would be told this. I called today to enquire about the costs to change.

According to this link, it looks like the pan has a drain bolt on it already. Obviously if you want to change the filter while you're at it, you need to replace the pan. Is it possible to just change the fluid without changing the entire pan?

I realize you should change the filter, but if you wanted to temporarily change the oil could it be done?
for me what ever oil or fluid I change I will change the filter too.

will they change it?
if BMW say it is maintenance free.
like all moving parts, there is ware and tear and the oil will be think and black.

also you will loss some mpg over time if not changing oil. The gearbox will not shift that smooth.
That is why I change my, it was not change gear smooth
