i read somewhere that a independent did a trans fluid change on a 7 series, and just after, the trans failed to the tune of something like 10k.
i guess bmw figures the odds are better at not disturbing the trans versus routine fluid changes.

we in HK have 5 member change it and it OK.

Personally if you do get the trans or diff changed, I would do it at the dealer. Yes it will cost more but if your trans were to fail 10k after the change, there would be a much greater chance that BMW would replace it via warranty than if you did it at an indy shop. IF the trans fluid changed caused the "failure" then why did they change the fluid for you if it caused the issue.
As for the 7series flush with trans failure, I would like to hear what year the car was and at what mileage the trans change was done at.

Internet is full of myths and misinformation. You don't hear from the 100's of successful transmission fluid changes but hear from the one that failed. I plan to do this and would rather take a chance than wait till it's too late. There is no such thing as a 100k fluid.

Wow it seems very expensive to replace a simple fluid. Thank god my smg tranny has a fill and a drain plug.
I provided the parts and the indy mechanic did it for me for $37.50(both tranny and differential) and took only 30minutes.
I wish bmw just drops the free maintenance and stop attracting wrong customers. My sister wanted 3series only because
she doesn't need to replace engine oil often and costs her $0 for any maintenance although she ended up with a Lexus IS.

According to this link, it looks like the pan has a drain bolt on it already. Obviously if you want to change the filter while you're at it, you need to replace the pan. Is it possible to just change the fluid without changing the entire pan?

I realize you should change the filter, but if you wanted to temporarily change the oil could it be done?

if you planning to keep it in tip top then I would change it.
Dose not cost much.
A new gear box will.

My X5 was under the Certified series warranty they have here which covers major components until 2010 or 2011 I believe... I'd probably have to check my invoice though.
