The problem in the US is that in the Northeast and California, there are mandates for low sulfur fuel and it is not yet available. I think by 2008 it will be. The rest of the country can drive diesels (more accurately buy new). But these areas represent 50% of the BMW market so it isn't worth bringing them into the US.

Of course it's better today. But the Industry has the technology for "clean" cars for years, for decades to be accurate, and is not using it.

But as we all know, its much easier to go after the individual consumer than after big corporantions with a strong lobby and much money to give to politicians.
