E60 535i Engine Noise
I have been having a misfire near the top end. I have a jb4+ but uninstalled it a couple months ago. Today I was planning on installing it again to pull the codes and try to diagnose. I started my car to pull it in and I heard what sounded like valves to me. Is this normal on a cold engine? I haven't heard it before because the hood insulates the sound. I have also ordered new spark plugs.

Thanks guys. I thought it might be normal as it was cold, but just never heard it before because of all the insulation. I plan on getting new spark plugs and if that doesn't fix the misfire, coils are next.

I'm going to check mine, that doesn't sound that nice to me but I do hear a ticking sound.

It's normal. When I had my engine cover off for day doing coils and vacuum line replacements it sounded like that on start up.
