You can drive with one or both off. The first button press turns off DSC but leaves DTC on. Press the button again or restart the car and things will be back to fully on. To turn both off, you need to hold the button down for a few seconds until you see a message that says something like "DSC off". Again, just press the button briefly or restart the car to get things back to normal.
Note -- you can't use the cruise control unless things are fully on...

Sorry guys, this is a very confusing topic that's been debated over the years here. It's so confusing that BMW even re-labeled the button to try to help straighten out the misconceptions. Rather than trying to explain things again, see if the following two pages from the manual make any sense:
Attachment 42338
Attachment 42338
Russ is correct in the soiled underpants description but the level of soil is proportional to the level of craziness in driving.
I had a 3000GT VR-4 once (AWD but no DSC). After demonstrating its handling by punching the throttle instead of the brake before entering a turn, my brother in-law asked if a change of underwear for the passengers was standard in the car because it sure was needed.

Is this an LCI thing? My crusie control works no matter wich setting I have.
With the help of the other forums members here, I think we should be able to figure out what works with what...

Lol - that just confused me even more
Ok, the simple version...
Don't push anything = clean underpants
Push DTC/DSC button once for partial disable = slight possibility of small underpant soiling
Push and hold DTC/DSC button to disable everything = new underpants (possibly coffin) required

I don't have ACC. Standard cruise control does not work after I push the DTC button. I can't say that I ever tried it in my pre LCI car, but can confirm it does not work in LCI.

I used to think if i press DTC once i will turn of traction control but leave stability control but yesterday i pressed it once and floored it of the line and system still kicked detecting wheel spin.
Im so confused... does pressing it once improve performance of the car? kinda like switching to sport?

Dis-engaging these features results in an automobile that behaves the way it would normally behave without computer-based compensation to control for roll, tire slippage, etc. It's funny to read the remarks from others about feeling that 'their panties may get spoiled' when both features are dis-engaged.
One thing that frustrated me with my M3 was the 'forced on' position of these features when cycling the car on/off. It became a daily routine for me to dis-engage them -- a frustrating experience with a car that is intended to be 'tossed into and out of' corners and have the rear-end circle around from the side (a skilled driver can easily negotiate and/or recover from these events and put the car in the proper position for the next stretch of road).
It's less of an issue for me on the 5 as I don't drive the car the same way I did my M3.
I wonder if one can permanently (until switched back on by driver after a car on/off cycle) turn these features off on the new M5s, M6s, and M3s?
I think this issue blends into the 'active/adaptive steering' debate.
It certainly would be nice to have a master 'engage/dis-engage' switch for those days when a driver wants to drive the car vs. being 'driven by the car'...
