I thought the dealer can make a new key based on your VIN #. Isn't that correct?

So, should this happen ever again; what is the least damaging or expensive way to break in? As far as I know, there isn't any secret way, nor BMWASSIST can help.
Break a window?

bmw assist cannot help, no unlock capability like OnStar. As for alohalc, isn't giving the girlfriend the spare key almost the same as giving her a ring? That's the question I'd be worried about, not whether she was a spare too!

I just ordered another Master key (totally 3 all in all) for AUD235.90, takes 2 weeks to get here from Germany, but now means that if i lose the valet key, which i will because i lose everything, ill have an extra master key - which will be kept at home.

same here. two masters and one valet. the second master key for me is a "spare" since my girlfriend has it. sorry for confused you . spare for my girlfriend? oh, she'll probably ask me, "spare key for me? am i your spare, too?" man, i better tell her that's a "master/main" key . my "spare" is not in the states...shh... .

Ok, but he had his key in ignition, the valet key in the wifes purse in the car as well as her key...!?

Anyways... A spare key for the girlfriend ? I wouldn't do that...
I was thinking about leaving the "spare" and the valet in my safe, but that's a big NO NO when you are married
Ah, well, too late now...

Yep, sounds like in I-Drive prefs... Vehicle Settings... Door Locks..., he had, "Relock door if not opened" or "Lock after Driving" selected... bummer... Be sure to check it people! (or uncheck... as the case may be!)
