Just follow that black cable to the other end and see what it is connected to and what happens when you pull out the door handle.
I've attached some pictures to hopefully help, One is of the "end of the cable" and the other is a shot of basically the whole cable from the handle attachment all the way around.
I'm thinking I need to take the whole handle off to figure out what's going on. I've loosened the screw right inside the grommet hole, but I can't locate the T20 screw inside. Does anyone have any advice for that or anything else I can try?

It really just feels like everything is attached OK, but for some reason the handle does not extend out all of the way. Compared to the other handles, it only pulls out about 1/2 to 3/4ths of the normal amount.

Looking at picture 1, it seems like there is something dislodged just to the left of the green plastic piece. Do you see that black plastic channel and the piece of metal that looks like it is coming out at an angle? look more closely at that to see if something is dislodged.

Are you referring to the silver metal piece that isn't straight with the rest? That is the piece that pulls with the handle to move the cable and unhook the door. Everything is hooked up as it should in that department. I ended up taking off the outside handle to see if I could find anything messed up on that end, but no luck (and I can't manage to get the handle back on. The screwdriver was apparently just long enough to get the torx screw loosened, but not long enough to tighten it back up. This is really driving me nuts.. Hopefully by some miracle when I get it back together it'll just end up working but I'm not holding my breath. Any other suggestions out there are welcomed.

Spray some WD40 everywhere that will probably get it back working. Its always worked for me. LOL No seriously though is the metal piece going through the full motion. Can you check to see. I would pull the cable from the bottom and work my way up. Something is preventing it from going its full range motion.

I'll have a look later on tomorrow. Been at the hospital the past few days for the birth of my first. This is what prompted me to step from my 3 series up to the 5.

Just an update, I ran out of options and took it to the dealer. Turns out I need a new carrier. Thanks for all the help trying to diagnose it.
