You are correct, the water pump would need to come out for it to be the short return pipe. But, if you could pull the coolant feed pipe through the front of the engine (which i'm sure you can't), the water pump would need to come out too. Its behind the water pump/lower timing cover and under the valley pan.
The ony thing I can think of is the "Vent Pipe" #12 p/n 17127519254. I believe that is what you see in Only Bimmers 1st photo, hanging in front of the vacuum pump and making it's way up to the right valve cover and back down behind the short return pipe.

Absolutely agree that #12 was replaced for that price. Makes sense.

Glad to hear you're up and running. But I'm skeptical that you had the dreaded 10k issue.
A year and half ago, I had a low coolant warning, I had AutoScope inspect her to see what
the cause was. Steve spoke about the dreaded 10k possibility, but they couldn't find anything.
They topped it off and I was fine for another year. Nerces runs a fine shop at AutoScope.
When my radiator started leaking (a year after the low coolant warning), I had my indy take
a look at it. It turned out to be the expansion tank along with several hoses. Luckily it wasn't
anything close to the dreaded issue. As others mentioned here, there are a number of hoses
that can leak through wear and tear, age.
