It was my understanding that the dipstick came back with the LCI, but I am not sure if earlier models had them and if it disappeared in between somewhere. I know my '07 530xi did NOT have one. Rudy should know.
The V8 550 always had a dipstick. On drivers side of engine at the firewall.

In my '08 550i, it's in the back left (passenger side). It's low and not marked but it is an oil dipstick.
Passenger side? I think thats your tranny dipstick.
The 550's have them on the Drivers side at the firewall.

Some member posted that the dipstick is returning. We now have Members in possession of shinny new 09s. Is the dipstick back? If it is back I wonder if it can be retrofitted on older models?

I've never had a problem with the electronic oil level sensor and have found it to be quite accurate. I check my oil level much more often with the e-gauge while I sit in traffic and prefer it.

I personally don't trust the sensor very much. Anyone knows how it works... It check the level during engine run time ( while drive ) ... at this time, depend on the rev. of engine, the oil is pump to the top and all different places.... How do the sensor knows the last litter (qt) of the volume. Do they have a chamber and tested while engine is running, this chamber will have that amount hight of oil .... measure from there???? If it done this way, oil viscosity mighe effect the reading since it will have different flow rate.
I have 535xi ( the twin turbo engine ), iDrive told me MAX .... when new car out of dealership. My first change, I put 7qt, got MAX.... 2nd. I put 6.5qt, still got MAX.... I am going to start with 6qt next to see how it goes.

I was told there's one quart tolerance built into the system.
Sometimes, there isn't a better mousetrap...
