Checked mine this evening, only found some rather dry crispy leaves and lots of grit. I think it should be something bmw does though. It was pretty dirty!

while opening the air filter box do your really have to unplug the electronics as described here before or you just release those metal clips and simply pop-open the filter???

what is a good aftermarket performance filter??? only K&N???? where to buy? I would be afraid there might be some "fake" K&N's on Ebay......
I want the best one but to be sure I can trust that filter to really "filter" the dirt

You can search the web and find a hundred articles/discussions... on air filters. They are similar to oil - everybody has an opinon.

Many will disagree, but if you hold a K&N up to the light, you can see holes in it. I question how well it can filter. Then again, how well do you have to filter? The AMSOIL foam provides good flow and probably the best filtering - 2 stage foam is often used off road.

The problem with K&N, and the AMSOIL foam is that is that you have to oil it. In my youth I screwed around with K&N and AMSOIL foam. IMO - they are just not worth it dealing with the mess and the slight possibility of fouling your MAF sensor. Back in the days of carberators, a little extra oil did not matter. Now it does.

If you want a good flow (better than stock) and good filtering low maintenance filter, try the AMSOIL paper filter. You can read all the pros/cons on thier website. It provides good flow and good filter capabilities and all you have to do is vacuum or blow it out.

The biggest improvement you can do is stay with the stock filter and remove the carbon filter - it is only for emissions and the seapage of fumes through the airbox. That by itself will significantly increase your airflow.

If you really want to increase your airflow, put on a Dinan CAI.

I have a German tea kettle (enameled cast iron and stainless steel, no less) and it features a Hohner Harmonica tri-tone whistle to indicate boiling.

I got to thinking: How about finding and installing a Hohner Harmonica at the intake box?

You could have one tone for 2000 rpm, 2 for 4000 and 3 for full "boil" at 6000+RPM!

Kind of like our own pipe band (you Scots, take notice!) What a Hoot, mon!

Cheers,
Ray Hull

Checked mine yesterday. Only one tiny piece of debris (leaf).

Quite a bit of dust in the filter which I blew out with a compressor.
