Interesting discussion.

I can see my Yankee friends are of two minds on this. Here in Canada, there wasn't really much controversy when it was first introduced. It's such a minor issue that if studies show it reduces accidents how can you be against it? Now, it looks funny when you see a car without lights on during the day.

I know what you mean. Used to be, you could find the Adventures of Dudley Dooright, along with Nell, and Snidely Whiplash whenever you turned on the TV. Now, it just seems strange that time has passed us by and , it would just look funny to tune in and see 'em there again.. Especially in Canada.

FWIW, I have the DRL off in my car... but during daytime I'll typically drive with the parking lights/angel eyes on

Not sure if this approach provides the "safety benefit" of full-blown DRL, but it sure looks good from the outside --- particularly during a not so sunny/overcast day... Correct me if I'm mistaken, but if you have DRL on, I don't think you can achieve this "look".

that is why it is called parking light and not cruising light!!!
I can turn off DRL in Idrive menu and use always automatic mode, saves power and time

Just a simple Brit here, but we'd say that if even just one life was saved, or one Doctor's time could be directed towards real illnesses rather than patching people up after being run down, then DRL must be worth it. If you're driving a car, what does it matter to you whether your lights are on ?

I guess this is where the average American differs to a European. You're more liberal in some things, VERY much less in others. When it comes to safety, we're conservative, but in personal behaviours very liberal. Isn't the world great !

Don't be too cocky How many people in the UK put babies and children in the front seat. That is far more dangerous than driving with foglights, or not wearing a seatbelt, or any other contentious issue. And worst of all, the driver makes that decision for the child, NOT themselves. At least if someone decides to ride a bike without a helmet, they take that risk themselves.

BTW, I agree with seatbelt and helmet laws. I don't like the seatbelt warning (which p*sses me off whenever I get a curry), but understand why it's "necessary" in this word of political-correctness.

Back on topic though. I have my lights on during the day. No programming required. You just select "A" My lights are almost never off as a result. Not by choice, as a like to automatic control.

You make me laugh... "freedom". Freedom like the "Patriot Act"? DRLs should be the last thing on your list man......

And I agree with the others, but you will never understand. There are too many idiots out there so the government DOES need to step in and add some safety rules/laws. Why? Because no man is an island, and it affects us too if some idiot crashes/smashes/etc. his body and wastes hospital/people time.

Get your priorities straight buddy!

Only nonsense here is people like you forcing your safety ideals on people that like their freedom.

SDS, if you are here in the U.S., we do not have that option in iDrive to turn the DRL's on and off. For us it requires a visit to the dealer.
