Read all your replies. What is strange is it changes from my wifes key and my key. Mine stays on all day, her's cut off during the day. But its good to know its normal. Thanks.

[/quote]No, Rudy is right. It's for the sun. It's only on cars with advanced A/C.

One sensor is where you describe, sticking up out of the center of the dash.? The other sensor is pressed against the windshield behind the rear-view mirror (near the rain-sensor).
One controls the auto lights, the other controls the relative brightness of the CID & MID in between the speedo and tach, I believe.

Okay, I've verified (from TIS) that the thing sticking up in the middle of the dashboard is the "solar sensor" for the automatic climate control system (also called "IHKA High").
The following is a quote that describes the function of the solar sensor...
I've also verified that the light sensor is combined with the rain sensor mounted in the rear-view mirror pedestal.
The following is a quote describing the function of the rain/light sensor...
Finally, I found that the brightness of the CID (iDrive screen) comes from an integral phototransistor. In order to control brightness correctly, the CID evaluates the following signals:
1) the dimmer signal from the light module (dimmer rheostat setting)
2) signal from the central photocell in the instrument cluster
(According to the TIS, the display brightness (offset of brightness) is also adjustable in the "settings" menu under "display settings" then "control display." Specific wording can change with CIP software updates, etc.)
The following is a quote that describes the function of the solar sensor...
The solar sensor is located in the middle of the dashboard.? This sensor is only active in automatic mode.? The solar sensor takes external sources of light or heat (e.g. direct sunlight) into account, which could affect the air conditioning of the vehicle interior.
The sensor consists of 2 photoresistors.? The sensor transmits an analogue signal to the IHKA control unit for each side, driver and front-passenger, depending on the intensity of the sunlight at each side.

The following is a quote describing the function of the rain/light sensor...
The rain/light sensor is integrated in the rear-view mirror pedestal attached to the windscreen.? The rain/light sensor is a combined rain sensor and ambient-light sensor.? It detects the amount of rain falling on the windscreen in order to control the windscreen wipers, and the level of ambient light in order to control the headlights.

Searched the forum but could not find an answer...? Is there a sensor on the running lights?? When I turn my key to the left and leave it, I was under the assumption that the lights remain on all day.? However, I noticed that now they turn off during the day and turn on at dusk.? Normal?

Daytime running lights is an idiotic concept. I don't buy the safety issue, either. If that's the case, why not program the horn to SOUND CONTINUALLY, or insist that all vehicles be painted with day-glow paint strips. Same lame argument, IMO.
