I found out today that i am covered after all
The insurance adjuster said the total damage estimate was $10200 when my mechanic said $6000~...insurance dude said both headlights need to be replaced but to me they looked in fine condition besides being disconnected from their original spots..so idk what the deal is but as long as the car runs the same when i get it back i can honestly say i dont care...the shop owner said that the car had frame damage and that i will be the first subject for some new $20k machine he bought; 3-4 weeks until completion..well see

YIKES - your car is going to be the test mule for new body shop equipment ?? ? ? There are lots of aluminum frame and suspension components. IMHO it's not a job for a 1st timer!!
Most damage like this is best handled by a "Certified BMW Repair Shop"!

i totaled my parents car a while back and i wasnt even on the policy for the insurance. they covered everything and even a lawsuit.. they had geico. dont think it matters as long as the car is insured.. then again every insurance is different ... if you need airbags i got some available for cheap that im trying to get rid of. let me know. 6k sounds like alot of money by the way... i would see how much your autobody guy is getting the parts for and you might be able to get parts cheaper from other sources.
Most modern cars are so highly electronic that the repair costs are outrageous. Someone else on one of the BMW forums damaged his headlight, hood, fender, bumper. Top of the head estimate is about $15,000. Airbag sensors and airbags did not go off. A good whack on the front end of a car can result in $25;000.
Re your comment about locating front end parts for less than a body shop--that is a lost cause unless you are willing to buy the entire front cap or front clip. Junk yards know that those parts will bring premium prices, and they typically will refuse to sell a fender or a hood.
Rear end parts are easier to buy because over 50% of wrecks involve at least one front end. Hardest parts to sell on any car are the wheels and the doors.
If OP has a later model E60, he will find that he has several sensors inside car that went off and need to be replaced and re-programmed.

Huh? Make an insurance claim... who cares

When insurance companies decide on rates, they also crank in a substantial fudge factor. (Health ins cos look at last year's payout for claims. Then they add an inflation rate (about 20% each year for past several years). Then they add another 20% fudge factor.
Not sure how auto ins cos work, but they likely do something similar to health ins cos.
