What size? Because per bmwusa.com, the 535xi comes with all seasons....

Maybe the dealer switched them on you?

Except the Sport Option - that comes equipped with UHP RFT's not recommended for ice or snow!

A dedicated set of winter tires would have saved you. I've driven a RWD BMW for six winters without issue in all kinds of winter weather including ice. Unless you need the extra ground clearance or have a steep driveway, the X-drive is a waste. Better to put the extra cash required for the X-drive toward a dedicated set of winters. I would never go back to all season aka all compromise tire. I had a FWD rental car with all seasons last week and it sucked on ice. I feel much safer in my RWD 535i with dedicated winter tires.

My xi plowed through our Chicago snow with no problem. I drove it like a jackass in residential areas, trying to drift around corners and the DTC kept me alive. There are definitely pros to have an xi and the snow is just one of them. Still, you can't substitute the AWD for common sense, and a good set of winter tires is definitely a must over the all-seasons. Not to mention, the AWD has the advantage in off the line situations.

Not on the XI....
The Sport package on the XI gives you the Multi-Contour seats, Shadowline Trim, and Sports leather steering wheel....

you CAN however opt for the style 124 wheels with summer tires as a separate $600 option (sport package not required)

Sorry to hear that and gald you and no one got hurt, but I thought DSC/DCT are desgined to handle this type of sitiuations which they do @ 50 mph on rain storms.

Glad to hear your ok! That sounded like a nasty accident. i got really close as well when the first snow hit, my car spun out and i almost hit a person head on! on just 2 inches of snow on the floor! i think it was because my tires sucked i have all season contin. I'm going all winter tires next year.

It's been a while since I posted here, figured I would as this is the forum that first inspired me to get my 545i.

Stormy day in New Jersey, left work early to beat the weather. Black ice on the road over a low bridge. Literally driving straight under 50 MPH - most other cars were flying by me at 70MPH+. Started to fishtail wildly, then into 360 degree spin, then hit concrete barrier.

Luckily, the 3 cars bearing down on me avoided hitting into me. Scared the crap out of me, but I was OK. Got the car over to the shoulder, towed away, and awaiting insurance report.

Lessons learned:
* Don't drive a RWD car in ANY kind of weather.
* Probably have to get an xi (AWD), I don't think I trust this car anymore, despite the fact that I loved it and it was a tank - probably saved my life.

At what estimate amount do you think the insurance company (GEICO) will total this car?
That's why I never drive my 530i in snowy or icy days. Only drive my 850 with Nokian snow tires in snowy and icy days in Boston.
