I wouldn't take these lessons from what happened. The most important question is: What kind of tires did you have on the car? Even AWD won't help much on black ice. It's not your car that was the problem....it was the ice, and probably your tires.

Glad to hear you are ok, though. Fix her up and get some good snow tires afterward. You'll be good to go.

.... but I thought DSC/DCT are desgined to handle this type of sitiuations which they do @ 50 mph on rain storms.
DSC/DCT can do nothing to overcome the laws of physics. People think they are invincible with these technologies and therefore get themselves into a lot of trouble (and no, I'm not talking about the OP).

+1 :)
...I just returned from Anchorage where my daily drivers were either a Saab 95 Wagon or a Subaru Outback and every winter day had the potential to be a black-ice or hard packed snow day (limited plowing and no salt) . Studded winter tires are the norm (even with the winter bike riders) and, from what I could see, almost all BMWs are iX equipped ( a bunch of 330s and 335s and a smattering of X3s and X5s) and their drivers, knowing that they have one of the best engineered and safest cars on the road, stick with their BMWs no matter what the weather. As for big SUVs, I'm sorry I didn't get a picture, last February, when I saw a MB G-Wagon lying on its side at one of Seward Highway exits.
