Went out tonight to a great road, always empty that time of night. Was wanting to play with my new Sport Automatic retrofit. Was about to get on it when my Radar detector went off.
There was nothing out there, kept looking - it was very dark. I was about to assume the radar was coming from the toll road which was parallel to me. Thought to look at my night vision screen - sure enough there was a white rectangle that really stood out as something different. Kept driving on another 1/2 mile or so and sure enough a patrol car was sitting in the median looking right at me and I was the only car around. Just saved a few points and a couple hundred $$

good point - didn't measure exactly because I was looking for the car.
What I have found so far is just a generic "see 4 times further than headlights". This is the camera that is used in the BMW:

And this:
Due to its long range detection capability (up to 300m for a human being, more than 800 m for a 2.3 x 2.3 m object), BM
So a car size object ~800m or 1/2 mile!

Yep - the combination helped me make sense of what I saw on the screen. The problem in a city is that it seems like a radar detector is always going off for something and it gets too easy to ignore. The one I have does a great job of tracking repeated false alarms via GPS and filters them out with no alert - but in this case I was on a road I don't freaquently travel so no learned false alarms but i immediately assumed it was false or coming from the toll road.
