So I get a control msg saying to add 1 quart as soon as possible, but the service menu says oil change in 9k miles. The mesage has not been steady it will come up disappear then come up some hours later. Been happening since last night. Dipstick looked normal. Any input would be well-appreciated thanks.

The two have nothing to do with one another. The service indicator simply tells you when to change your oil-its roughly every 15-20k miles and takes into accoutn your driving style-agressiveness etc (some computer measurment) to dictate when to change it ut its almost always every 15k.

The level is just like a dipstick only its electronic-only tells you the literal level of the oil in the system-and its low but doesnt mean you need an oil change, you just need to add some oil.

Every bmw I know of burns oil normally. Especially with newer engines not broken in. My brand new n52 engine burned oil for the first 10k miles a lot as I drove it hard but after 10k I never burned a single ounce or had to refill

O ok, I added a quart of Castrol 5w-30, I thought maybe I had a leaky seal that could always be a possibility though no? I got an oil change I'd like to say a month ago

I am guessing your car is decently old-how many miles? Yes if losing oil was not a problem and now it is happening that that is a different story than a new engine burning oil. Yes you want to keep an eye out for exact amount you are losing and if it becomes you have to add a quart more than every 3k miles than its a problem

I had the same message came up today but my car is a '07 550 with 37K miles. Should I be concerned?

I have an 2004 530i, I am young at tend to be a spirited driver, so i go through a quart of oil about once a month. Immaterial of what your warning says, always check your oil level manually about every three weeks or so. Going through a quart of oil that fast is not uncommon nor does it mean your car is on its way to catastrophic failure. Your oil level is also a different notification and does not reflect the necessity for oil service. I have been fortunate enough to have four other BMW's prior to my e60, all shared the same 3.0 I6 engine, and all with the exception of my 2004 X5 required oil at a similar pace to my e60. I drove the truck much more moderately compared to my other bimmers which were sporty as well, so it went through oil at a much more realistic pace. IF your check your oil regularly and stay update with all service i wouldnt worry too much, its just part of maintaining your car.
