My Ride: 2006 530i - Sport - 6spd - Orient Blue with Auburn/Anthracite
Default

Hello,

I've been driving my 530i for a while and I admit I am intrigued by the power of a 550i... However, when I look at the weight and weight distrubution differences, I see that the front end of the 550i is considerably heavier than the 530i.

530i is 3472lbs, distribution is 50.8/49.2 -> front weight 1764lbs
550i is 3803lbs, distribution is 51.3/48.7 -> front weight 1951lbs
So, 550i is 187lbs heavier, or more than a 10% increase over the 530i

Is this much of a difference going to be noticable in the handling? I think I would like the added power of the V8, but I really love the way the 530i handles, and I'm not sure I would trade it off simply against faster acceleration.

Comments? Anyone driven both and compared them?

Thanks, Jon.

There is a difference but if you want speed the V8 will make up in the straight line. Where you live the V8 will have an advantage.

550 is not as agile as 530 for sure. You'll feel more torque and more juice to go faster compared to 530. Sometime, you'll feel that 530 is at the limit for going faster, but not for the case of 550. I'd take 535 which is a speculation for now.

I've driven both. You can feel the extra weight of the V8, but it also adds an element of stability/smoothness to the drive (subtle, nevertheless). I think it is a slightly more luxurious ride.

As far as handling, didn't notice THAT much of a difference. Regarding the front-end weight, what's important is the % distribution (i.e. the 550 also has a heavier rear-end), and those are almost identical for the 530 vs. 550.

Bottom line - I doubt you'd regret getting the 550.

I think if you like power than go with the 550i.. You can't go wrong with a 550i or 530i both are great cars ..

I drive a 545I and have been given a 530 as a loaner several times; the only difference is in the power, you are not giving up anything by going with the 8 cyclinder. I would suggest getting the sports package my car handles as well as any car Iv'e driven.
