Hello,

Looking at the engine specs for the '06 525i and 530i, I notice that while hp is greater by 13% (225hp vs 255hp), torque is only greater by 3% (214lb-ft vs 220lb-ft). If the torque is what really makes itself felt during acceleration, what is the obvious effect of the extra horsepower? Would it more noticeable when climbing a steep hill or what?

Thanks, Jon.

Hi Jon,

I would have thought that the increase in overall performance would have been exactly 13 and 3% respectively, as you quote! Yes maybe the higher powered car will be better uphill but the 525i will still climb hills like they are flat roads.

I don't think anyone on this forum has the new 525i hence the lack of comment.

I think the 525i will be great fun to drive. A friend of mine has a 1998 E39 523i and its still one hell of a drive.

I upgraded my E60 because I didn't like the interior! The extra power is nice but believe me the lower powered one was still awesome.

I have the 06 525...plenty of power. Can't compare it to the 530 though.

I have the 525i sport model and i can confirm it has enough power. Especialyl when you consider that the 530 is what id personally consider a bit of a 'gas guzzler'.

I can still achieve over 30mpg when cruising at 90 on the motorway here but still be away from the lights in 7.5seconds which aint too shabby at all.

According to my calculations:

Output is 160kw (525i) vs 190kw (530i) = 19% higher in 530i
Torque is 250 (525i) vs 300 (530i) = 20% higher in 530i

Unless there is another 2.5 litre engine I am not aware of

The new 525 in the US is in fact different from the 525 elsewhere. Here, the 525 actually has a de-tuned 3.0, the same engine as the 530.

Hummm are you serious?? 530 gas guzzler??? Last time I checked the 530 is rated better than the 525. and even with the old engine I believe the 530 was better than the 525 by 1mpg

1 mpg cannot be considered gas guzzler... actually wait a minute... its actually 1 mpg in FAVOR of the 530.

(US) 525i
Fuel Consumption

Manual transmission - City/Highway 19/28 mpg
Automatic Transmission - City/Highway 19/28 mpg

(US) 530i
Fuel Consumption

Manual transmission or [SMG] - City/Highway 20/30 [20/29] mpg
Automatic transmission - City/Highway 19/29 mpg

(US) 545i
Fuel Consumption

Manual Transmission [SMG] - City/Highway 17/25 [16/24] mpg
Automatic Transmission - City/Highway 18/26 mpg

Now comparing the 545 SMG to the 530 6spd you can say the 545 is a gas guzzler...
