Thumbs up

Has anyone come across this code? code Table 20 279B. Mapped thermostat cooling: mechanical. Is the thermostat going bad? If so how hard is it to replace on a '04 530i? Also, can it adversely affect the transmission fluid viscosity if the thermostat is not working correctly? I am not getting any overheating indications - yet. Thought these model temp indication looks like it was an after thought.

Thanks.
