O.K., this will be a stupid question to some of you. But I'm trying to figure out my clutch wear. Does the clutch wear/ age when the pedal is depressed all the way, sitting at idle? I have always thought it would only wear when it is partially engaged -- so NOT when the pedal's all the way to the floor, and NOT when it's totally disengaged.
I'm just trying to figure out whether it's better to put the car in neutral and release the clutch when standing at a light.
By the way, when I've done some aggressive driving and get out of the car, I can smell a very slight burning smell. Is that brakes or the clutch, or what?
Thanks.

Sitting a light with the clutch fully depressed is no wear.
FWIW, my E39 540i 6 speed at 100k, first started to show slippage during hard acceleration on very cold mornings (zero F), but otherwise, seemed fine.
Just be swift and deliberate in your clutching and you'll be fine. I remember going for a test ride with an expert Jaguar mechanic in my XK-E and feeling as though he was going to put his left foot right through the fire wall, his disengagement was so firm; similarly, his reengagement was equally fast and sure, but not at all jerky...he had that engine speed timed beautifully.
Cheers,

Great. That's what I hoped. I don't think I'm bad about it, but it's nice to know what I'm working around.

There is no clutch wear when sitting idle at the light with the clutch depressed but you are putting more wear on the Throw out bearing and some of its springs. Its best to just put the car in neutral and let the clutch up at the stop light.

I also noticed that now I only have to press really lightly on the clutch pedal to change gears. Does that also mean that my clutch is on the verge of wearing out??
