Dgjk, my car was produced in July/04 and I'm quite sure they only updated my car with CIP 20.00.00. Just before Christmas the Dealer told me that they should receive CIP 20 before de end of the year, as promised by BMW, and that version had MP3 capability included. So it was.
My E60 535d 09/04 build with CIP 20.0 cannot play/accept MP3, Nav Pro of course

My car is back, after almost a week for service. Oil + filters change and some small repairs, (noise from the steering wheel, noise from the back, broken lock of glove compartment, etc.) and, after a long, long waiting, s/w update to CIP 20 with MP3 capability.
And guess what? it works and works just fine. I?m so happy to get finally such a nice to have feature.
The noise from the back is still there, but the dealer has identified the origin of such noise. It is something to do with the back safety belts. As soon as the dealer gets the new items, already ordered, he calls me to do the replacement.
I believe I was very lucky when I decided to buy my car at this Dealer, they are just great.
Well back to the important thing, MP3? I?ve burned a CD for testing and decided to organize it in the following way:
- Root
- Artist/Band
- Album (Actually the CD)
- Music (Each song of the CD)
It works exactly that way, it?s superb!
Following some (bad) pictures I?ve taken last night to show you how it looks like.

I've also burned a DVD+RW with the same structure but with some more folders.
First I put it in the first drive but no deal! Then I put it in the second drive, (NAV DVD out) and yeesss... it works, with much more songs on it.

7/05 build with no nav for sure can get it to work with the proper CIP
As far as the 03 production - should get it, but I am not sure - I read somewhere that the radio in the early e60's in the US was different
What would really be nice is if you could call you dealer, give you VIN and then have them tell you yes or no

I would like to try this with my non-nav 04 model.
I want to make sure that I burn the disc correctly.
Firstly can I use CD or DVD?
Can I use Nero to do the burning?
Any other settings I should know about?
What software can I use to convert some of my CD's to MP3 format?
Streak
