So I just went out to the car. I opened one of the rear doors and then started the car. The same car icon appeared as it always does and went out. I put the car into R and moved it - no warning the rear door was open . Interior light still on.

So I'm curious as to what you see if you do the same?
When I did the same "test" I'm sure the pictogram only showed up when I was going forwards. I guess it doesn't worry too much if you are in reverse as it's not expecting you to travel very far backwards?

I did some playing this afternoon and Kev525 you are right - if you leave the door on the initial latch and set off forwards the gong sounds and you get a check message. Nothing happens in reverse. So that's good to know. Actually it was pretty amusing - I got out and closed the door and set off up the road happy that I'd got to the bottom of the issue - then after 100m the gong goes off again and 'door open' appears in the iDrive main display! The message cleared immediately ... guess the software took a little time to catch up!

Since they went to so much trouble with the PDC car pictogram you'd have thought they'd do a simple door open pictogram on the iDrive main display. It was easier to make sure all the doors were closed before you'd started with the E46 display. Now you have to buckle up and get 50m up the road before the car tells you ... a definite step backwards IMHO. Now how do I go about submitting a software suggestion to BMW....

Sorry, I guess that would have helped a lot!

Here's the icon is question ... sorry about the pic it's dark here so had to balance the camera on the top of the steering column. It appears when turning the key to position 2 ... and disappears shortly after.

What does it mean I wonder?

The significant data in that shot is that your next service interval is in 3800 miles. I think the car icon is meaningless. Just there to tell you that the system is being checked.
