CD/DVD Field on iDrive

My Ride: 530i 2006 model w/ Nav
On the iDrive screen you can see two fields you can scroll into in the audio section. I can spin the iDrive mouse to "CD" or "DVD". I was thinking that maybe it would play a DVD but that is not the case as I tried it and got an "unrecognized" message. I believe the the DVD is solely for the NAV DVD only. Am I correct in assuming this? I have the NAV system obviously.

The DVD drive is for the Nav disk.
Depending on the age of your car and the software level, you may also be able to play mp3 files. The dealer applied an upgrade to mine a number of years ago that added that feature.

you can play an audio or an MP3 CD in the DVD slot as well.
