Talking

I am have been an owner of my new bmw 545i with nav for about a week now. I love the way the car drives and feels, also the use of the iDrive is great especially with the voice commands. Also this is not my first BMW so I understand the cost of ownership somewhat.

But I am feeling frustrated with then updates for the iDrive system everytime I need to make a change. (Like add Ipod adapter, Sat radio, Aux input, MP3 playback)

Everything I want to do I have to go to the dealership which involves them updating the CCC. Actually That is not really the problem. The problem is that the prices that the dealerships charge sometimes are not consistent from dealership to dealership and they cost seems exorbent.

Example:

I Want to install Sat Radio (I have the SAT prep) the dealer ship wants to charge $1000 dollars ($500 install & $500 to update the ccc). I think that is crazy and you have no choice but go to the local dealerships. I can install the Unit myself, but I think there is a $250 flat rate for any updating of my CCC.

I called another dealership in the area they charge $800, but I see on the board in diffrent parts of the nation I have read $500 install prices why is that.

Anyway it is what it is.

Once I get all the stuff installed I probalbly will not have any more complaints hopefully.

This is taking away from the money I want to use to Upgrade the wheels and add a bodykit!

Does any one feel the same?

Now that would be something, and aftermarket plug in type of device where you can download all or whatever software updates from the net, then simply hook up to your cars computer and update the system or add options! (patent pending!) You know we could probably make a million dollars if one of these techy guys on here could help us out.

I am with you something as simple as a software upgrade should be free at the dealership when you spend $50K or so on a car.

The hardware and software exists to do what you want. But if you think $500 is bad you ain't seen nothing yet. Absolutely impractical for the owner that wants to do the occasional update. Only indies would find it useful.

Independant specialist not linked directly to BMW.
Very common in the UK where dealer prices are astronomic (like everything else).

No, I am talking about a DIY capability to do PROGMAN (CIP) updates yourself, not what your dealer will charge you to do it. The capability exists - but not practical in terms of cost. Indie is INDEPENDANT SHOP like a Porsche/BMW/Mercedes/Audi auto repair shop that is NOT dealer affiliated. They would be candidates for the Hardware/Software investment to be able to upgrade PROGMAN on a BMW
