just i quick poll to see what e60 owners prefer on their driving machine!
I think that we get ripped off just for the brand name, nothing else!If you contact BMW customer service ,they will tell you which oils are approved by them, and ,believe me ,it is quite a list. Here in the UK ,I can buy Mobil 1 or Castrol which meet the BMW LL-04 Specification,or I can buy Q8 or Total oils which are half the price and are approved by BMW as meeting their LL-04 Specification. So, since I do DIY oil and filter changes on an annual basis (due to low mileage) rather than waiting for a computer to tell me what to do,I choose Q8 or Total.

because 0w-40 is the approved mobil 1 oil and 5w-30 is the approved castrol oil. mobil 1's oil runs on the thinner side so there 0w-40 is a very thin 40 weight whereas castrol's 5w-30 is a thick 30 weight. both are LL-01 approved.

Ok next time i'll be switching to the 0-40 mobil 1 as opposed to the 5-30 mobil 1. Any possible damage done using the 5-30 mobil oil?

it wont make much of a difference. but if you live in cold climate, use the thinner weight.

Around the world there are different engines, different fuel additives, different maximum speeds and different maintenance programs provided by BMW.
Here in the states you just need to follow the mileage/time intervals, weights and the service specs of the oil. BMW NA only recommends Castrol Synthetic.

Current oil is gold in color. Anything after M05010xxxx is Gold.
Source.

German Castrol (GC) is a TRUE synthetic Group IV. Made from PAO/Esters, not Group III(like Castrol Syntec 5W-30).
More here.

The other Castrol Syntecs are not true synthetics (the one on the left).
Other examples of true synthetic oils are Mobil1, Amsoil, Redline, and Royal Purple to name a few!

I buy my oil from the dealer, which is Castrol. With my BMWCCA discount it ends up being cheaper than buying Mobil1 or Castrol from an auto parts dealer.
