For those of you who are bothered by this, relax yourselves. #1, it's not your car so dont worry too much. #2, I took delivery of this car in Munich and spoke with 5 different people from the Dingolfing factory where these babies are born. ALL of them said the same exact thing. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BREAK IN PERIOD FOR THESE V8 MOTORS. The only break in I need to be concerned with is the brake pads so for those of you who care, and I thank you for doing so, I took very good care of the brakes. And #3, it's not your car.

All the best
I'm not an engineer but have to add one little (well, 4 large) item to the break-in period ... TIRES! Running 4 brand new (probably runflat) tires to that speed can't be safe. Have BMW engineers also made that unnecessary or do I need to recalibrate my understanding of how to treat a new complex automobile.

Let me know and I'll immediately cease my stretching and warm up routine at the gym, appetizers before dinner, and foreplay .

But I'm not cutting out dessert !

You mean like when a racecar comes into the pits and gets a new set of tires and then does hot laps? Is that what you're saying is bad? The tires are NOT runflats and getting them rubbered in takes about 10 miles. So yes, you need to recalibrate your understanding of how to treat a new complex automobile but please continue the stretching, apps, and foreplay.

All the best

I agree. I threw caution to the wind when I got the E63 by letting hollywoodtrash do a few runs to redline with less than 100 miles. My next Euro delivery in 2010 for a BMW, I'll be sure to take it to the limiter just like you did with your new baby.

In F1 racing, the tires are warmed up in special heaters before they are put on the car at pitstops.

ive been a passenger in an M5 that was delimited, and broke 160mph whilst overtaking cars that were likely 90mph slower in the inside lane. For a couple hrs later, i was still wide eyed. I would never do this myself as there is just too much scope for things to go wrong, regardless of the legal limit. I would be more concerned at the sensibility of doing that speed with others on the road rather than harming the car.

Next time, take it to 155 and step on the brakes and let us know what that feels like - i bet thats a lot more of a rush!

Sorry to take exception but, except in very unusual cases, tires intended for swap during a race are prepped for running - that may include run-ins on a dyno type machine or even a few laps during practice. That was the way we did it when I ran with an SCCA ticket for Team Datsun at Road Atlanta, Pocono, and Lime Rock. New rubber is not popped out of a mold and run up to triple digits under the stresses of a race.

I'll stick to my regimen ... especially dessert
