Wolverine so would you venture to say with a 550i 6spd manual one can "take" an E46 M3 coupe (non-SMG)?

the 550i is not going to improve this much either, there is no way for the 545/550 to beat the M3 if the drivers are equal....?

The driver is fine.

545 is pretty even with the M3 'vert. The reason is the M3 Convertible weighs about 400 lbs more than the M3 Coupe - about the same as the 545. The 545 has more torque.

I raced an M3 'vert a while ago and was absolutely dead even from a 40 mph roll to over 100 mph. The M3 Coupe is a different story though...

hope you know I was just playin around saurabh... i actually know someone who is a pretty good driver, and first had the M3 coupe for 18months while he waited for his 645ci...when I had asked him to compare the acceleration/speed off the line etc, he said that even though he loves his E63, the M3 blew it away it term of acceleration and overall speed, which i was disappointed in as I was thinking the 6er could compete off the line, ....he says he'd never attempt to race from a stop as he believes the M3 would smoke him at the lights....

Absolutely no offense taken

Now i know that a M3 coupe can easily take on the 545i but the convertible would definietly be at an even point. But I am eagerly waiting to see what kind of power the 550i is going to unleash and if the M3 coupe will be able to keep up with that.

Can't comment on whether an M3 is faster or slower than a 545i, however its nice to know that a 4 door family car has similar performance to a mega sports car

I was driving along a fast dual carridgeway the other day when a Vauxhall VX220 non turbo (same as small Lotus) came up behind me. We both reached the island at the same time, him still inches behind me. As we rejoined the main road I floored mine in DS mode and left him in a black smoke cloud. I don't mean by a few yards, I mean hundreds of yards. He must have thought I spent all this money on a sports car and have just been blown away by a family car

This isn't a characteristic of the diesel engine is it?

It would be a driver's race. I would bet on the 550 at hwy speeds.

the current M3 convert and 545i should be a good race.... very close.... I think the 545i would pull at highway speeds..... they weigh almost the same, and the 545i has more HP and MUCH more Torque.....

as for the 550i vs the M3, it will be close, but I think the M3 will still win..... all depends on how much power the 550i is really putting out....

What makes the convertible slower than the coupe. thought they both have the same HP?

At higher speeds, the convertible's higher drag takes over. If I remember correctly from undergraduate fluid dynamics, aerodynamic drag is directly proportional to the square of the velocity. Hence, the higher drag coefficient of the convertible is most likely slowing it down (in addition to the higher weight).
