The A/C seems to turn on on its own. I manually turn it off, and minutes later, it turns back on. Its happening more frequently now then it used to. Has anyone experienced this? What is wrong?

I just ran this thread a few weeks ago. It turns out when I toggle the knobs it will turn off and on, so I'm guessing that over time they've rattled loose.

My AC fan speed knob does the same thing. The other day, I actually fought with it for about 5 minutes - turning it off, and then it turning itself back on, until I realized that I was having an argument with a switch - kind of like arguing with a kid, or an idiot adult! So, I stopped! Hasn't happened again since. I think there may be a short in the switch. The knob is really picky anyway. Sometimes if I even slightly graze the switch with my hand, as it heads over to the cupholder for a super-gigantisize drink, it changes the fan speed. I used to think that the metal ring on the outside of the knob used touch capacitance, like the preset menu buttons, where it works off of the electrical conduction in your body, in addition to the mechanical force of rotating the knob itself. But, after thinking WAY too much about the crazy AC switch, I think its just picky, very touchy, and sometimes does whatever IT wants to do. Funny again, kind of like kids, or idiot adults!
simple solution. adjust your temp knob to middle and it wont happen again. If your knob is turned all the way to the left the A/C would turn itself on on a slightest little bump

You can always do what happened to me. Leave the car unlocked in your driveway and some thief may come by and steal the whole A/C system. That'll teach those pesky knobs.

Faulty AC sensor has made three problems for me in my E39/E60's.
It's a bitch to change in the E60.
There is a shitload of writings about this matter on this site.
