My wife and I are going to NY nest weekend. She wants to shop. I can't complain - she let me buy my car, but she wants to fly and my car comes in Monday. So I do have a question. Can I drive may car - It is an 8 hour drive (6 with a BMW). Do I have to slow downthe speed up the entire time. Should we just fly and break my car in around town? I REALLLLLY want to drive the car there.

Take the car and have fun.

BMW recommends that for the first 1200 miles that you: keep it under 4500rpm and under 100mph as well as vary your speed for the first 1200 miles (don't use cruise control for extended periods at the same speed).

She let you buy the car----let her enjoy the comfort on the ride to NY.

Take the car if possible. What better way to break it in. Not sure how far, but from the drive time it must be close to 500 mile one way. Just vary your speed and RPM by selecting different gears as you cruise. You will practically blow through the break in period on the trip and be done with it. Tell your wife she can spend the money you saved on airplane tickets for something special for herself. Or, you could always meet her there.

BTW...my car is supposed to come in next Tuesday and I am supposed to go to Houston Tuesday, which is about 400 miles one way. I hope I can get my car in time to take it so it gets broken in quickly. I doubt I will have time though. It is supposed to arrive at the dealer Tuesday and as luck would normally have it it will likely come in too late for them to prep it and have it ready for me to take. But I would not hesitate to take it if I could. Bad news is it will be there for a week while I am gone. Depressing.

I would not drive the car long distances at steady speeds until significant miles have accumulated. Of course BMW says, probably somewhat conservatively, 1.2K. I would break the car in a little less conservatively than BMW says, but still not do the long distance/steady speed thing until maybe 600 miles at the earliest. This distance is arbitrary, as BMW's probably is, as there is no way to say exactly what one should do. BMW has more experience with auto longeviety than we do though. I behave somewhat consistently with the saying "break a car in slowly, and you get a slow car."

YA drive it. many people buy cars out of state and drive them home. Just vary the gears from 4 5 6 and RPMs, keep the RPMS under 4500 and under 95 mph and you're all good to go.

Have fun!
Enjoy!
Stay Safe!
and report back!!!!

Exactly! 160 km/h is about 100 miles/hour.

Where can you drive that fast, legally?

Enjoy and keep your drivers license.
