Like many others here, I was very careful during the break-in period.

One related question: When you first start the car in the morning, the tach has the "notches" down to 5,000rpm which go away after a couple minutes. For longevity, should I not rev the car very high when starting out? I am assuming a lower rpm is recommended as the oil has not fully lubricated the engine.

Treat a cold engine like you treat a new engine: don't floor it, and keep the revs down until it warms up.

Since we're kicking up controversies: who has changed their oil right after the break-in period? I'm three-for-three with my BMW's in terms of following the break-in period guidelines and changing the oil at 2,000 miles. I'm also three-for-three with engines that don't burn oil, get good gas mileage when driven appropriately (which isn't often!), and just don't seem to have too many problems. That's an 88 528e that I sold with 127,000 miles on it, my '99 528i with 73,000 miles on it, and my 2003 330Cic with 17,000 miles on it. As far an engine-related problems, I had zero on the 528e, a bad Vanos under warranty on the 528i, and a bad belt tensioner under warranty on the 2003. Also - I change the oil twice as often as the BMW period recommends.

I ordered my 530xi last week (to replace my '99 528i). I plan on treating it the same way as my other BMW's.

I always follow the recommended break in procedure on my cars, get the oil/filter changed after 2,000 miles, and oil/filter changed every 7,500 miles (half the recommended interval for synthetic).

Now, where's the controversy in that, if you're just going to agree with everything I say?

I concur with your oil change. BMW dealer sent me a special for $73 oil change after 2 months of ownership. Hmmm. was that a coincidence or are they telling me something? I think the controversy is people who follow BMW recommendations to the "T" and not change oil until the FIRST 15K service.
