My Ride: 2005 545i, Steptronic, Sapphire black, Black Leather, Poplar wood trim, Sport package, Cold weather package, Premium/Logic 7 Sound, Navigation, Park Distance Control, Blue Tooth, Rear Shades, Heated rear seats, Sirius satellite radio, dealer delivery 1/05
What is the real deal with the break-in period for a new 545? Pampering it for 1000 miles just doesnt seem right, or is it? Should it be steady rpm or up and down?

Never steady. Always vary the speed. Setting cruise control has always left me with an engine that needs oil added over the life of the car. Currently, oil level at the top of the dip stick waiting on the first change - 11 months since delivery and none added.

Never sustained speeds or sustained RPM's. It is also good to back off the throttle occasionally and let the engine break the speed a bit.
I have always varied my RPM all over the map. During the first 1500 miles, I just kept adding more or more RPM, trying to vary it through the range. Then after that period, I ran it hard on a trip - sometimes driving in a lower gear to keep the RPM's high for short periods of time.
So far no oil usage to speak of: maybe a half of a quart in 7500 miles.

[/quote]Right. Probably even good for it. Obey the recommended rev for break-in, though.
